It’s farmers market season in Sacramento, and with most of the major seasonal markets now open, there hasn’t been a better time to buy fresh local produce all year.
New to the scene is the Midtown Farmers Market, which began in April at 2020 J St. Reaction has been enthusiastic, and locals have been heading to the area each week since it opened. The market is held from 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. every Saturday from April through October.
A classic Certified Farmers’ Market popular with the locals when it’s in season is the one at Cesar Chavez Plaza, bounded by Ninth, 10th, I and J streets. Held from 10 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. every Wednesday, it’s a great place to pick up fresh food and produce – as well as kettle corn, barbecued food and other farmers market goods – on a lunch break.
Want a Certified Farmers’ Market with a view? Head to Capitol Mall and Sixth Street from 10 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. every Thursday. Farmers market stalls line the grassy median with great views of the Capitol and Tower Bridge.
Other farmers markets in the Downtown/Midtown Sacramento grid include the Certified Farmers’ Market held at Eighth and W streets every Sunday from 8 a.m. – noon, the Tuesday market held from 10 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. at Ninth and P streets (Roosevelt Park), the market held Tuesdays from 10 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. at 16th and P streets (Fremont Park) and the Thursday market held from 10 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. at 15th and L streets (East End State Capitol Park).
What’s in season right now? Head to the farmers markets for cherries, cauliflower, navel oranges, blood oranges, Eureka lemons, and a host of other products. You might be surprised by what else you find.
